1777: The Articles of Confederation rose a question of the lands west of the 13 colonies up to the Mississippi River. Would they be a part of the Articles and who would have control of them.

1783: The Treaty of Paris gave up the land east of the Mississippi River from England to America. This included: Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, part of Georgia.

1803: The Louisiana Purchase: The United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France which included: Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and
Louisiana.

1833: Oregon Fever began to take hold. Many were traveling to the southwest areas on the Oregon Trail.

1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed with Mexico, leaving California and New Mexico to the United States. This also ended up claiming Arizona, Utah and Nevada.
